TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced Wednesday the nomination of the party's chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen to compete for the leader of Taiwan early next year against incumbent Ma Ying-jeou.

The DPP's acting chairman Ke Chien-ming said at a press conference that Tsai won a narrow victory over Su Tseng-chang in a two-day random telephone survey of the general public in Taiwan.

From Monday to Tuesday, people living in Taiwan were asked over the phone which of the three DPP's candidates, Tsai, Su and Hsu Hsin-liang they most supported.

The election for Taiwan's leader and legislative authorities will be held in January 2012.
